Vaccines play a major role in your pet’s health are the simplest, safest and most effective way to prevent a number of diseases and illnesses. Vaccines work by stimulating the animal’s immune system to recognize and react when the animal layer is exposed to a disease organism. The defence of a vaccine does gradually decline over time. What vaccinations do you provide to new puppies?

Core vaccines like DHP and Rabies are always given. For others like Lepto, Lyme and Bordetella, your veterinarian will discuss the right protection for your pet. The vaccines chosen are dependent on lifestyle and risk.

Why is it important to vaccinate your puppy?

Vaccines provide the best protection from illness and disease that can be picked up from the environment around them or from other animals.

At what age should I bring my puppy for their vaccinations?

We start a series of vaccines at your pet’s pediatric examinations and continue through their adult years. If your pet’s vaccine history is unknown, we will tailor a schedule, individual to your pet’s needs and lifestyle. Puppies are usually given a series of vaccines at 8, 12 and 16 weeks.

How should I prepare my puppy for their first vaccination visit?

Puppies will do just about anything for treats and praise! As you walk into the building, be sure to offer both. If your puppy is nervous then go slow and please let us know upon your arrival!

Vaccines for Dogs

Vaccines are meant to protect your dog lifelong from various diseases and illnesses. They are broken into two categories. The ‘core’ vaccines are those that are must-have (including the rabies vaccine, which is mandated by law) while ‘non-core’ vaccines are optional. By calling us or scheduling an appointment, we can recommend which vaccines are right for your pet. It is vital that your canine friend continues to receive their vaccines in order to keep them protected from preventable diseases all their life.

What types of vaccinations do you offer for adult dogs?

• DHP, a CORE vaccine. It prevents canine distemper, parvovirus and hepatitis.
• Rabies, a CORE vaccine. It is required by law.
• Bordetella (parainfluenza or kennel cough), a NON-CORE vaccine. This is recommended for dogs who spend
  any time at boarding or grooming facilities.
• Leptospirosis, a NON-CORE vaccine. It is recommended for dogs who are exposed to standing water like
  ponds, creeks and swamps.
• Lyme Disease, a NON- CORE vaccine. This is recommended for dogs who are exposed to wooded areas, tall
  grass, bush or rural areas.

Is there a schedule for how often a dog should be vaccinated?

Adult dogs should be vaccinated every 1 to 3 years. Vaccine protocols can vary from patient to patient. Factors include age, lifestyle and location, species and sometimes even breed. Due to a pet’s individual needs and requirements, your veterinarian may modify the vaccine schedule.
